Since December 2018, Singapore River One has repurposed 31 carpark lots on Circular Road, transforming them into attractive public spaces for the CBD community and visitors to utilize and enjoy. CSR is more than just an initiative. We wanted to bring out the theme – “People” – due to the Chinese character “人” when you see the aerial view of the street. This is what makes the street unique and full of character, and re-brand Circular Road making it THE street that people will associate with hanging out, a place that they can let their hair down, relax and chill out.

Carpark Spaces Reimagined (CSR)

Workouts, CSR

  • Since December 2018, Singapore River One has repurposed 31 carpark lots on Circular Road.

These lots have been transformed into attractive public spaces for the CBD community and visitors to utilize and enjoy. Through CSR, SRO sought to bring out the theme of “People”, as the streets of Circular Road and Lorong Telok form the Chinese character “人” when seen from the aerial view. People are what makes the street unique and full of character, and through this re-branding, SRO envisioned Circular Road as a street that people can associate with unwinding, chilling out and having a good time.

  • Monthly street activations adding vibrancy to the street

Some of the activities curated during Circular Road’s weekend street closures were acoustic live music performances, group exercises and roving magician acts to create a sense of liveliness!

  • A collaboration with students from Raffles Design Institute (RDI)

SRO worked with students from RDI’s Interior Design, Product Design and Visual Communications faculties to create parklet design proposals specially for Circular Road. This marked the third collaboration between SRO and RDI, after our Underpass Mural and Street Furniture projects, to realise our placemaking ideas. As one of our valued stakeholders in the precinct, RDI shares SRO’s passion in placemaking projects by incorporating them as part of the students’ academic curriculum. Through such collaborations, SRO hopes to nurture young talents in real practical projects.

  • Through consultations with our stakeholders, 2 shortlisted designs were identified and installed in March 2020.

  • Urban Green-scape

Inspired by Singapore’s “City in a Garden” vision, this design pays homage to Singapore’s reputation as one of the world’s greenest countries. In an increasingly vertical society where skyscrapers line our cities, and green spaces are replaced with high-rise buildings, Urban Green-scape represents the students’ wish for Singapore to always treasure and maintain the balance between nature and man.

  • Biophilic

This design promotes a mutual love and respect for our living system. Biophilia means “love of life”, and the design seeks to connect or integrate natural elements and living things into buildings and achieve sustainability in different ways.

  • As of COVID-19, these parklets have been removed and the parking lots have been reinstated.

However, Singapore River One intends to resume our regular music performances and activations along Circular Road as part of our weekly road closure programme. Keep updated on our social media pages to hear about upcoming activities!
