Since December 2018, Singapore River One has repurposed 31 carpark lots on Circular Road, transforming them into attractive public spaces for the CBD community and visitors to utilize and enjoy. CSR is more than just an initiative. We wanted to bring out the theme – “People” – due to the Chinese character “人” when you see the aerial view of the street. This is what makes the street unique and full of character, and re-brand Circular Road making it THE street that people will associate with hanging out, a place that they can let their hair down, relax and chill out.

  • Besides specially custom-designed parklets

created jointly with students from Raffles Design Institute (RDI), CSR also features monthly street activations that include acoustic live music performances, group exercises, and roving magician acts to add vibrancy to the street during our weekend street closures.

  • Last July, Singapore River One started working with students

from the Interior Design, Product Design and Visual Communications faculties on the creation of parklet design proposals for Circular Road. This is the third time SRO is collaborating with RDI (past projects include Underpass Mural and Street Furniture), to realise our placemaking ideas. Being one of our valued stakeholders in the precinct, RDI shares our passion in placemaking and supports SRO’s projects by way of incorporating them as part of the students’ academic curriculum. Through such collaborations, SRO hopes to nurture young talents in real practical projects.

  • Through consultations with our stakeholders on the street, 2 shortlisted designs were selected amongst the rest.

The parklets were subsequently fabricated and installed in March 2020.

  • Inspired by Singapore’s “City in a Garden” vision,

Urban Green-scape pays homage to Singapore’s reputation for being one of the greenest countries in the world. In an increasingly vertical society where skyscrapers line our cities with many green spaces being replaced with high-rise buildings, Urban Green-scape represents the students’ wish for Singapore to always treasure and maintain the balance between nature and man.

  • The second design, titled Biophilic,

promotes a mutual love and respect for our living system. Biophilia means “love of life”, and the design seeks to connect or integrate natural elements and living things into buildings and achieve sustainability in different ways.
